Sarouk No. 4
Beautiful, full pile, antique 1920’s Very Fine Mohajaren Transitional Sarouk Runner
This rug represents a transition from the Mohajaren to the very finest Sarouk. These rugs were made in the Arak region in Persia (Iran) and were considered the Gentleman’s rug. They were hand knotted with the finest wool and have a distinct weave which is unmistakable. They were made from 1900 to the 1920’s in the same region as the Sarouk and are part of the evolution of the Sarouk from the mid 19th century Farahan, to the Farahan Sarouk, to the Mohajaren Sarouk, to the Persian Sarouk, and finally to the American Sarouk. Unlike the American Sarouk, this one is not painted and has the same moss-like wool of the Mohajarens.
A runner of this size is rarer for transitional Mohajarens and one with original, exceptional pile. The field/ background color is the rosy red of the unpainted Sarouks. The colors are crisp, sparkling and the wool pile is springy and plush. It is most likely a city rug made in a weaver’s home with specific instructions for wool, dyes, and design to insure consistent quality throughout.
All sides and ends are intact. The rug has been professionally cleaned
