1930’s Karaja/ Heriz Area Rug
Dim: 8′ 11″ x 11′ 9″
Karaja, Karajeh, Gharajeh is a small rural village located in Northwestern Persia in the Azerbaijan region in the Zagros mountainous area. These Turkic speaking tribes migrated from central Asia centuries ago.
They are placed in the broader category of Heriz rugs although they predate the Heriz.
They are noted for their distinctive triple medallion motifs with each medallion uniquely different.
The Karajeh women weave whimsical images around the Medallions in the most creative ways.
The triptych of framed medallions form a single vertical column. In this wonderful piece columns are repeated 7 times making a total of 21 medallions.
They are also known as Gharaja, Gharajeh, and Karaja.
