This is an Antique Shahsavan Mafrash Kilim Tribal Bedding Bag Textile. This is a rare tribal piece where all panels and sides are in tact. The Shahsavans are a Northwest Persian nomadic tribe who are so named because they defended the Shah from invaders.. They were known as “Defenders of the Shah”. This hand-woven textile is called a bedding storage bag which is used to store bedding and other household equipment in the tribe’s tents and also tied to donkeys or camels during their migrating between their winter and summer camps.. Four panels are decorated with hooked lozenges within large octagonal symbols and always made with a woven striped kilim bottom.The design is accomplished with a technique called weft wrapping and is extremely fine. Because of their colors and pleasing tribal design, they are frequently cut apart and each panel is sold separately. Because of their beautiful colors, appealing tribal designs they are in great demand by tribal enthusiasts and decorators.
Intact pieces in this condition are usually only found in private collections.
