Description

19th Century Shirvan Band Kilim, 43″ × 104″

D0246:

This antique kilim was made more than100 years ago by the Azerbaijan people in south eastern Caucasus which is directly north of Iran near the Caspian Sea. This is a nomadic piece used by tribes as a main carpet in tents that is placed over the wool felt that covers the bare ground.

This banded kilim has the predominant bands of vegetable and naturally derived dyes of browns, red, ivory, blues, and very light ivory cream.
Cotton was not available to the tribe so only the wool from their sheep or camels were used to make these kilims. The weaver used the finest wool, very delicately woven with a high quality weave.
This kilim measures 45″ by 104″.
