Description
This is a 1920’s – 30’s Blue Sarouk with lush pile, sparkling, shiny wool, and a high knot count of 144 KPSI. The Blue Sarouks are rarer than the Sarouks with the cheery red or maroon backgrounds. It has the elegant, long extended floral sprays more typical in a Mohajaren Sarouk. All colors are glowing with nuances of jeweled colors so well executed by the weaver that they appear to be painted on a canvas. This lovely rug has good springy pile over the entire rug with no loss to the fringes on either end. The kilim on one end has been loosened to extend the fringe.
These rugs were made in Northwest Central Iran, in the Arak region where all Sarouks and Mohajerans were woven. Mohajerans were more finely woven than most Sarouks; however, this rug has the weave closer to a Mohajaren. These rugs were in great demand by the German and American markets in early 1900’s. For the American market, the rugs’ colors were sometimes enhanced after weaving by over-dyeing with a darker red over the rosy red, and with a darker blue over the indigo blues. For this reason they are sometimes called “Painted”. This rug, however, was never “painted,” retaining its original colors as woven. Such rugs graced the homes of the wealthy and were in high demand in affluent homes in America in the first half of the 20th century. Production of Mohajerans stopped sometime in the 1930’s.
This rug measures 45 by 84 inches and is and excellent condition for its age, with some gentle wear overall.
